The Indian banking system consists of 27 public sector banks, 25 private sector banks, 43 foreign banks, 56 regional rural banks, 1589 urban cooperative banks and 93,550 rural cooperative banks. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is the apex and central bank in India which was established in 1935, under the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934. It is also called as the Bankers Bank. The largest public sector bank in the country is the State Bank of India which was established in the year 1806.

The banking system in India is acknowledged to be strong the world over this was demonstrated when our country could withstand the subprime crises. Majority of the banks in India are nationalised and around 80 per cent of the market share is controlled by the Public Sector Banks (PSBs). With the kind of economic growth and the potential to grow further the banking sector will need huge number of trained and qualified personnel every year and it recruits manpower through competitive examinations based on the number of vacancies.
